Mexican food just might be one of my favorites. I am certain my love for this popular cuisine comes from strong cravings for spices. Mexican food is also fun to make, likable to most people and is a true fan favorite.

I attended an appetizer party years ago where one of my friends made a similar black bean dip. Ever since, I have been on a mission to recreate it with my own spin. That’s when my creamy blender black bean salsa dip was born.

Why You Will Love This Dip

It is super easy to make. You throw the ingredients into the blender and bam, that’s it! There is not much chopping involved which saves so much time! There’s nothing like easy dips to make party prepping as simple as can be.

It is a crowd-pleaser. Every time I bring this to a party, it is the one appetizer that is completely gone. However, that means no leftovers for me….boo!  This is quite honestly one of my favorite recipes to make for any gathering.

Just dipped a tortilla chip into the black bean salsa dip.

It makes a large batch. This makes enough for a large party or can feed your family for several days. It’s a great recipe for meal prepping for the week, as well.

It is a healthy appetizer dip. Black beans and salsa are the main ingredients. Who knew that a healthy dip with no cheese, olive oil, or sugar would be such a hit?

How To Eat This Dip

Well, there’s the obvious way…grab the tortilla chips and dip away! That is most definitely the best way to enjoy this dip. Crackers, corn chips, or pita bread would all work, too.

If you are like me and enjoy using your food in a variety of ways, add the dip to your favorite burrito or taco. (It takes the place of regular beans). It will be the best bean burrito you’ve ever had, I am sure of it.

You can also make nachos with the dip. Cover a plate with tortilla chips, scoop this dip onto the chips, and add your favorite toppings!

Another favorite in my house is quesadillas. I spread this dip onto one half of a tortilla and add shredded cheese. And, then I fry the quesadilla in a pan to warm everything up. Mmmm!

Don’t discount the combination of raw veggies and this vegan black bean dip. It’s a lighter way to enjoy this easy appetizer that you will feel so healthy eating.

How Are Black Beans Healthy?

Black beans contain a healthy amount of fiber, protein, and folate. They are the perfect protein alternative for vegans and plant-based eaters. Like many other varieties of beans, they have a lack of cholesterol which makes them an ideal source of a hearty and healthy ingredient.

Why the Type of Salsa Matters

One ingredient that gives this appetizer its flavor is fresh salsa. It is my recommendation to use a product that you enjoy.

The dip will highlight those salsa ingredients nicely. So, if you are into green or red salsa, mild or medium, whichever it is, choose wisely as this could make or break the flavor for you. I recommend fresh red blended restaurant-style salsa.

Don’t skip this step. Whether you are a salsa fan or not, this ingredient is a must!

All of the ingredients needed for this black bean dip.

The Ingredients

Black beans: Grab two cans of black beans as the base of this recipe. This easy black bean dip is hearty and filling, thanks to the black beans. Any brand will work. I do suggest using organic varieties.

Red onion: Use up to 1/4 cup of minced red onion for this black bean dip recipe. You can adjust the amount based on how much flavor you are interested in. Use about 2 tablespoons instead for a slightly lighter flavor.

Jalapeño pepper: Ditch the seeds while chopping the jalapeno. I have not tried this dip with the seeds, but if you’re into spice, I say go for it. I prefer making it without the seeds.

Garlic: This is packed with flavor and so healthy for you! You can certainly use garlic powder, however, it won’t have a strong garlic flavor. Reduce to one garlic clove if you would like it less garlicky.

Lime juice: Grab yourself a lime and squeeze it for fresh juice. In my opinion, fresh is always best. You’ll enjoy the citrus and fresh flavor that lime juice brings to this simple black bean dip.

Salsa: I highly recommend using a container of fresh salsa. You will find them in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store. Better yet, use homemade salsa! (But who has time for that, LOL.)

Salt and black pepper: Finish off this tasty dip with the perfect amount of sea salt and black pepper. You can taste-test it and add more as needed.

The Instructions

Step one: Place all of the dry ingredients into a high-speed blender. This includes black beans (rinsed), jalapeno, red onion, garlic, salt, and pepper.

All of the dry ingredients in the blender.

Step two: Place the wet ingredients into the blender. This includes fresh lime juice and salsa.

Just added the wet ingredients to the blender.

Step three: Blend everything until it is smooth and creamy. You may need to stop a few times and scrape down the sides of the blender.

Starting to blend the ingredients.

Step four: Once everything is creamy and fully blended, grab a spoon and taste test! (My favorite part).  Add additional salt, pepper, and/or lime juice as needed.

The black bean salsa is blended and creamy in the blender.

Step five: Simply pour the dip into a small serving bowl, grab some tortilla chips or fresh veggies, and dig in! *Serve immediately at room temperature or place it into the fridge to chill ahead of time.

How to Store Bean Dip?

To store, place the remaining dip into an airtight container and in the fridge. It should last for up to 5 days. Do not freeze.

Tips + Modifications

I do not recommend using a food processor. It won’t become as creamy as it should. However, if that is all you have, I say go for it. It just may not turn out as creamy and more chunky. The flavor will still be great.

This is a flavorful dip. If you would like it slightly lighter, reduce the amount of red onion to 2 tablespoons and only add half of the jalapeno.

Use a restaurant-style fresh salsa for this recipe. It has the perfect amount of liquid for this recipe. Pico de Gallo is not recommended as it does not have enough liquid.

You can optionally add fresh cilantro to the blender or better yet top the tip with minced cilantro.
